Program Description
The Commercial Music Project is where students apply advanced skills in music performance, composition, and production. This project-based course emphasizes real-world experience through live performances, professional sound production, and the creation of original music using industry-standard DAW software. Students will develop and showcase their work through mixing, mastering, and live sound engineering in professional venues. The course culminates in public presentations of student-produced music, reflecting a comprehensive understanding of the commercial music industry.
Sequence of Classes
Intro Course - Commercial Music 1 (CMP 1)

Performance, composition, and production of music. Development of skill in performance practice for varying styles of popular music in ensembles, including arranging cover songs and performing improvisation. Advancement of music theory concepts to facilitate songwriting and composition of original music. Introduction to traditional song forms incorporating notation and orchestration of simple harmonic progression and melody. Music production/recording of original audio projects including working with MIDI in a DAW environment.
Concentrator Course - Commercial Music 2 (CMP 2)

Performance, composition, and production of music using music technology. Further development of skill in performance practice for varying styles of popular music in ensembles, including arranging and improvisation. Intermediate popular music theory concepts not only further the ability to learn popular songs more easily, but also facilitate the more intricate composition of original music in popular song forms and genres incorporating notation and orchestration of score and parts in industry standard music notation software for live performance. In-depth instruction in the usage of DAW software to facilitate the creation of original audio projects including working with MIDI and live audio in industry-standard DAW environments.
Capstone Course - Commercial Music Project

The Commercial Music Project 3 is the capstone course of the Commercial Music pathway where students advance and apply skills acquired in Commercial Music 1 and 2. CMP is a project-based course where students will engage in music production projects, professional live performance engagements, and live sound production techniques. Recording projects will include original compositions using DAW software, mixing, mastering techniques, MIDI, and audio tracking, arranged in a popular music form, to be presented publicly. Live performance engagements include set up and tear down of professional sound equipment, mixing sound, creating sets, and execution of live performance techniques in a professional venue setting. CMP may be repeated for credit.
