Program Description
The Teaching Pathway offers courses designed to prepare students to pursue a career working in education. Students who enroll in the program will gain knowledge in child development, teaching, career readiness, and hands-on experience working with students in a classroom setting. Entry-level courses will focus on the stages of development of children from birth to adolescence, child psychology, and the workplace skills needed to prepare students for their internship working in elementary, middle, or high school classrooms.
Sequence of Classes
Intro Course - Education Pathway 1
(UC/CSU 'G' Elective)
This course is designed primarily for students interested in child development and the many facets of the education industry from prekindergarten through grade twelve. Much of the units will involve learning about early childhood education and children's physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs from birth to adolescents. The curriculum integrates academic and career-technical concepts in all aspects of education, including professional standards and requirements to teach; licensing, regulations, and safety procedures; child growth and development; positive interactions and discipline. Students will explore learning theories, practice instructional, and management strategies, and plan and implement age-appropriate and grade-appropriate lessons. They will hear from guest speakers experienced in education-related fields and research the many career options available to them in the industry.
Concentrator Course - Education Pathway 2 | Dual Enrollment Psychology
Sierra College: Psyc C1000- General Principles of Psychology
Introduction to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Focuses on the exploration of major psychological theories and concepts, methods, and research findings in psychology. Topics include the biological bases of behavior, perception, cognition and consciousness, learning, memory, emotion, motivation, development, personality, social psychology, psychological disorders and therapeutic approaches, and applied psychology.
Capstone Course - Education Pathway 3
(UC/CSU 'G' Elective)
This elective is designed for students who wish to explore the field of teaching as a career. Students will intern at a local elementary or middle school, or in high school freshman classes, four times a week, where they will prepare and teach lessons under the supervision of the classroom teacher. Activities within the classroom include one-on-one tutoring, small-group instruction, monitoring individual and group work, and teaching whole-class lessons. When students are not at the school site, they will attend class at the high school, where they will receive instruction, methods of instruction, and classroom management. They will also develop plans for their off-site internships. Students will complete self-evaluations at each grading period and will be observed and evaluated by the course instructor as well as the classroom teacher.
